CHAPTER ELEVEN

LEANNA

“I like that dress,” Gigi says, coming into my room wearing her Connie’s Diner uniform.

“Did you just get home?”

“Yeah, it was busy today.” She sits down on my bed. “I made over three hundred dollars in tips.”

“Wow.” I turn from the mirror and take a seat on my bed.

“One step closer to getting my own car. Do you think Dylan would mind taking me car shopping?”

“What am I, chop liver?”

“No, but he helped you buy your car,” Gigi points out.

“True.” I stand and grab the necklace I laid out to wear. “I’m sure he’d be thrilled to help you.”

“You look nice, LeAnna. Are you excited about your date?”

“I am. Are you going out?” I peer through the mirror, hoping she will say yes. She’s been holed up in the house except when she has school or work. She hasn’t been as jumpy as she once was and seems like the same old Gigi. I see her talking to friends on the phone and it’s always buzzing with texts, but she doesn’t go anywhere unless she has to. I can’t figure out if I should be concerned or if I’m just overthinking it.

“No, I’m staying in.”

“You can come with Dylan and me, if you want.”

“No thanks, that would be weird.” Gigi giggles and climbs off the bed, stuffing the money she was counting into her apron.

“What’s weird about it?” I turn and frown at her.

“Me being your third wheel. What, do you need a chaperon?”

“No.” I laugh, turning back to peer into the mirror and fasten my necklace. “You know, I used to bring you on dates with me when I was in high school.”

Gigi turns to face me. “I don’t remember that.”

“Yeah, it was a long time ago,” I say and slip on a pair of shoes. “I pretty much took you everywhere with me.”

“Thanks, LeAnna,” Gigi says, her voice full of emotion.

I look up in surprise. “You don’t need to thank me,” I whisper. “I liked having you around.”

“Thanks all the same. I’m going to get some comfy clothes on.” Gigi stands and leaves when I hear the doorbell.

“I’ll get it,” I say, heading for the door and throwing it open. “Hey… Landon.” I peer at the young man whose smile is there and gone in less than a second.

“Hi, LeAnna,” Landon says, looking a little uncomfortable. “You look nice.”

“Thanks. Come on in.” I step back to let him in. “Gigi is changing.”

“I’m not here to see Gigi… I’m here to see you.” Landon steps inside and looks around. He’s a good few inches taller than me, and I can see patches of whiskers on his jaw. I don’t know if he’s being lazy or just in need of a shaving lesson.

“Me?” I close the front door.

“Yeah, I wanted to see if you had any work around the house you needed done. I’m handy with tools.”

“You want a job?” I ask, trying to hide my surprise.

Gigi enters the living room in leggings and an oversized sweater, and Landon’s attention quickly lasers in on her.
